Title: A Few Thoughts on the Teaching of Multivariable Calculus for Mathematics Major
Keynote Speaker: Liu Shibo
Abstract:
The practices that I'm about to mention were done by me when teaching multivariable calculus for sophomore undergraduates during their 1st semester at the Department of Mathematics of Xiamen University. Our focus is specifically on the differential calculus of vector-valued functions and the infinitesimal analysis that converts practical issue into integrals. In addition, we'll illustrate how to introduce the knowledge of linear algebra and ordinary differential equations, which students have mastered, into multivariable calculus to obtain results of significance.
Brief Introduction to the Keynote Speaker:
Liu Shibo (male) was born in 1975 in Guangdong. He obtained bachelor and master's degrees from Lanzhou University before continuing his study at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he was granted Ph.D. in 2003. In 2005, after accepting a post-doctoral position at the Institute of Mathematics of Peking University, he was employed in Xiamen University as an associate professor. In 2008, he was employed as a professor at Shantou University and then returned to Xiamen University as a professor in 2011. He serves as a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Mathematics of Xiamen University now. He successively led the program for young scholars and general program supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the program supported by the Fujian Province for distinguished young scholars. Since 2013, when he was selected as a member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy, he has been funded to visit ICTP for many times. In 2017, he was funded by the China Scholarship Council for a one-year visit at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include nonlinear functional analysis and variational methods for nonlinear partial differential equations.
