Lecturer:Zhang Jicai
Abstract:
Physical oceanography is a basic marine science that places emphasis on the mathematical and physical methods to study the properties and movement of water in the ocean, as well as related issues of marine environment, marine engineering, and climate change. Detailed physical oceanography research topics include: force field, thermohaline structure in the ocean; temporal and spatial variation of related mechanical motion; mass exchange, momentum exchange, energy exchange and conversion in the ocean. The continuous progress in physical oceanography research is of great significance to our efforts to build China into a strong maritime nation, and to solve global climate change and sustainable development issues of human beings. Physical oceanography is an ideal field in which mathematics is applied and characterized, and mathematics plays a key role in the study of physical oceanography. The makeups of this lecture are as follows: research contents, research methods, hot issues and future development trends of physical oceanography; an introduction to the application of mathematics to physical oceanography.
Introduction to the Lecturer:
Zhang Jicai, an alumni of the School of Mathematics enrolled in 1999, is a doctor of physical oceanography, associate professor, doctoral supervisor, Qiushi Young Scholar of Zhejiang University, and currently the Deputy Director of the Institute of Physical Oceanography & Remote Sensing. His research interests include ocean numerical simulation, ocean data assimilation and ocean dynamic process. His research expertise is to develop new methods and techniques on physical ocean fundamental research and practice based on mathematical methods. In addition, he has been a moderator of numerous projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and a participant in a number of major national scientific research programs. In the past five years, as the first author and corresponding author, he has published 18 papers in international mainstream SCI journals such asJGR-OceanandOcean Modelling. He has been awarded Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award in Shandong Province, Outstanding Graduate in Shandong Province, Outstanding Scientific and Outstanding Scientific and Technological Innovation Award for Postgraduates in Shandong Province (Advisor).
